Park Songs

1.
See yourself, feel yourself you are gone Tilt your head towards the light you’re still gone Honey you try, honey you try The stars in the sky are so bright on this night That I cry What if you forgot all the noise What if you forgot all the chaos And found yourself deep in the woods Is it the color of good? Is it the smell of what should be? Is it finding our way back? Honey, I say Don’t forget its not all bad Don’t don’t forget its not all bad Don’t dont forget to come back Don’t don’t forget to come back Come back home You come back to come home We come back to come home Did I find it overhead, it was a quick whisper of the wind I can’t tell you just what, but I found it buried deep within
2.
A chorus of cicadas As the day gives way to night The stars arrive above us The moon is on the rise The clouds move so slowly They seem frozen in their flight Pink glow gives way to shadow As they settle into night The mountains all decline In shadowed glory, shadowed size Now they’re just a thin black line Between me and the sky If you could hear them howling If you could be so still If you could hear this nature’s hum I hope someday you will.
3.
We are riding down one dark and windy road The Night is still, but the stars are high and bold Our light shines down the road, the lines lead the way Sun has set behind the mountains and said goodbye to day We see the birds and bats in silhouettes The owl spreading its wings as it flies up from its nest The coyotes are howling, the notes are all astray Somewhere in the shadows a Jaguar stalks its pray There’s darkness here that makes it feel like home The twinkle in the sky reminds you, you are not alone There’s a wide open wild for each of us to roam There’s a darkness here that makes it feel like home Chasing lights that burn a million miles away I can’t sleep a wink, I’ll be awake until it’s day My eyes fall on Orion with his belt and mighty spear We’ve long looked to the skies to help us quell our fears There’s a part of my heart that longs to stay Walking this wide valley below the Milky Way I hope this place stay wild so that I may soon return To see its natural beauty of which my heart is sure to yearn There’s darkness here that makes it feel like home The twinkle in the sky reminds you, you are not alone There’s a wide open wild for each of us to roam There’s a darkness here that makes it feel like home There’s a darkness here that makes it feel like home
4.
You’re still asleep Our friend’s cat cradled at your feet You speak two words, so soft so sweet I’m afraid to blink I used to fear The great unknown and feeling all alone A hate filled mind after it’s grown Seeds yet sewn You take the wheel I point south you start to drive We make the most of this once chance life I could almost cry Can you feel your feet As they hit the beach And the sun shining down And the light is all around Can you feel your heart Put the gear in park This is our life I could almost cry
5.
Treaties 03:29
They’d heard this town was a dangerous one And they asked why that was How do I explain that kind of trauma upon trauma And all of the bad it brings up? Cause there was the booze and it never stopped and there were the drugs Oh the dark black tar But there is the hurt that you cannot erase It’s passed down day by day Cause oh a people don’t forget When you don’t ever respect Thei land, their love, thei ways of believing how this world was made And where they fit in Then they asked, what’s the solution And I couldn’t help but cry God if you know won’t you write it down in a book, Cause I and no one else can turn back time I was a kid painted with privilege Inside and outside all at the same time Thought I could save but who was I to be savin? Instead I wrapped my guilt up in my mind. Cause you can have love and you see pain And you an acknowledge that you get to run away. When everything that you love and everyone you knew Is trapped up in a cycle and you don’t know what to do. Is trapped up in a cycle and you don’t know what to do. What have we learned? How can we change? Nothing can progress until we admit Our great mistakes Our great mistakes It’s not just a piece of paper that you write You can’t erase erasing someone’s life x2
6.
I’m letting go I’m letting go of Counting time by spaces and lines Leaving behind self prescribed alibis Projections of how to spend my life We walk the concrete by calendar days Counting out minutes in meticulous ways Writing down schedules in digital lines Store it in plastic and metal and wires We feed our fears by appeasing our taste Hiding behind our consumption and waste Things we don’t need too easily acquired There’s a subscription for every desire I’m letting go I’m letting go of Holding life in the things that I buy Measuring status by a material line Projections that value of my life
7.
Green on blue Your hard truths Ground fresh into a garden Your favorite hue Your kicked off shoes Two breaths short of a panic Right on cue Your secrets due The wave breaks right at the shoreline Green on blue Me and you Just us two Green on blue
8.
Leaf Peepers 01:11
Traffic’s Heavy on the 89 It’s Early October and they’re right on time They come in droves and they wait in lines It’s the leaf peepers We Make our way out of Windsor County Wind on over through Waterville valley They’re here too fillin’ streets and the alleys It’s the leaf peepers We Head to Portland on the 95 We Try to out hike em on the beehive They’re at the Lobster Pound eatin’ Whoopie pies It’s the leaf Peepers Look here babe, that color on the right Pull over quick seems to b a good sight What does the mean? Oh me oh my! We’re the leaf Peepers What does the mean? Oh me oh my! We’re the leaf Peepers
9.
Super Moon 02:08
I found you under the light of the moon You found the truth there in me too Super Moon, It was a super moon We walked down to the beach to see the light on the sand It lit up the sea as you took my hand Super Moon, It was a super moon You started a fire and I opened the wine I slayed you at cards but you said it was fine Super Moon, It was a super moon
10.
I woke up with the light it was right in my eyes You slept as I crept out of the back truck Climbed on my bike and rode towards the sun in the sky The birds sang like it might be their last song I couldn’t help but ride and sing along It was a hopeful tune. A bit of joy for me and you. Doo doo doo do do I watched the wings flap feathers skin and bone My bike, their beaks none of us alone They sing just like July Flying into November skies Bare rock, loose dirt this desert road These Stars leave dust when they explode You made the coffee black Sing to me when I get back Doo do doo doo do do do We ride at sunrise forever Repeat Bare rock, loose dirt this desert road These Stars leave dust when they explode You made the coffee black Sing to me when I get back Doo doo do do
11.
Go out walking with your heart in your hand Soak up the feeling of your feet on the land Know you’re just a piece of the puzzle and the plan Find your favorite story and live it if you can You are not alone More than blood and bone You’ve got a hunger for the great unknown the places you’ve been and the places you’ll go It’s sewn like roots way down in your soul It’s Deep like water and it’s hard like stone Can you hear the call? You are not alone More than blood and bone Go out walking with your heart in your hand Soak up the feeling of your feet on the land Know you’re just a piece of the puzzle and the plan Find your favorite story and live it if you can

Alpenglow 00:50
Moonrise over alpenglow The sun sets in the west Pink hues on the mountain snow The moon shines overhead The light tries her best To extend the bridge of twilight The crisp crunch of fresh fallen snow A blanket on the earth Footprints of all shapes that show What else was here first The light tries her best To reflect this subtle shift Of day to night

about

The Project: Park Songs
‘Park Songs' is an interactive, multimedia project merging music, photography, and literature to fully immerse the viewer in my experience of and appreciation for US National Parks.

In the winter of 2019/2020 my partner and I spent 8 months traveling thirty thousand miles visiting national parks around Alaska, Canada, and the rest of the United States. We hiked, biked, climbed, and camped in them. Inspired by each place, I spent countless hours writing and recording pieces of songs, melodies, poetry, and potential lyrics. In the winter of 2020/2021, while trapped at home due to the pandemic, I took those fragments and turned them into the collection I now call Park Songs, an eleven-song album, accompanied by a 48-page book of photos, poetry, and essays captured and inspired from that trip.
